An interesting BBC article reports news that cheers us up a lot! According to global research by Oxfam, pasta is officially the queen. Pasta has surpassed even pizza, rice, and meat. Italians' favorite food is being popular in European countries and in the Philippines, Guatemala, Brazil, and South Africa. After Italy, Venezuela is the largest consumer of pasta. Italians really love pasta like no country in Europe. We eat about 52 pounds of pasta in a year!

Why is pasta so popular? 

There are so many reasons. First, it is cheap; second, it is effortless to prepare; third, it is incredibly versatile and can be used with infinite ingredients. What could be easier than cooking yourself a nice bowl of pasta when you're short on time and don't feel like cooking? Our selection of pastas and sauces is an example of the many possible combinations.

A cultural phenomenon

It is the symbol par excellence of the Italian way of life. While spaghetti is the most popular and well-known pasta, in Italy, there are around 600 different types and shapes; and each Italian region cooks it with specific sauces. "Pasta has always had a global aspect as its origins are not purely Italian, which is unsurprising considering it can be made with just wheat and water – reports BBC - The Greeks and Romans had pasta-like foods but tended to be baked, not boiled. Ancient China had dumplings, but it's a myth that the Venetian explorer Marco Polo returned from China with pasta in 1295. The most accepted theory is that the Arab invasions of the 8th Century brought a dried noodle-like product to Sicily. This early pasta was made using flour from durum wheat, which Sicily specialized in. Under Italian law, dry pasta - or pasta secca - can only be made from this type of wheat, and the vast bulk of pasta is still made in Italy". BBC explains also the history of the Italian gold. "The first reference to pasta in Italy was noted in 1154 and it was about an export factory in Sicily (…) But pasta popularity outside of Italy really took off at the turn of the 20th Century with large-scale Italian immigration to the New World. This is when it started to become known as Italy's national dish".

However, the most loved spaghetti are the ones with tomato sauce. In the US, the most beloved Italian American tradition is "spaghetti e polpette", with the traditional red sauce and meatballs.
